TEST DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER (COMPONENTS)
This position is a Test Development Engineer for the Texas Rocket Development Facility, and will be a part of the Components Test Team. In addition to performing development, qualification and acceptance tests on components throughout Falcon9, Falcon Heavy, Dragon, Starlink and Starship, the team is responsible for designing fast and reliable tests to resolve flight-critical risks, issues and anomalies. This role is highly multidisciplinary and this individual will be tasked with a wide variety of test equipment design and test execution in support of the SpaceX mission. The team is expected to operate rapidly and autonomously; from developing requirements, designing and fabricating test systems, conducting safe operations, reviewing data and robustly automating tests and ground systems.
- Design, modify, and build mechanical systems (systems include small lugs and brackets through large structural weldments)
- Design, modify, build, and troubleshoot fluid systems (systems include low to high pressure gaseous working fluids, rocket propellants, and hydraulic systems)
- Design, modify, build, and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems, wiring, and instrumentation
- Working with responsible engineers, develop and execute tests from conception, including test article and test stand configuration, boundary conditions, fluid, electrical, and software schematics, and concept of operations
- Review data manually or using automatic scripts
- Provide daily direction and instruction to technicians to integrate test hardware and build test equipment
- React to rapidly changing priorities, travel to other SpaceX locations, and work unusual schedules as necessary to accomplish the assigned goal
- Apply critical thinking and address unusual problems with sound engineering first principles, while collaborating across multi-disciplinary teams to reach objectives
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, or other engineering discipline
- 1+ years of experience developing and executing tests from conception (internships count as experience)
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated success in which multidisciplinary engineering skills were used to execute a design or test project under technical/schedule pressure and where the scope and definition was limited
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills or adapt to new situations
- Work experience with aerospace structural, mechanical or propulsion systems assembly and testing
- Demonstrated experience where quick-thinking and problem solving plays a critical role
- Experienced with hazardous systems – cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, pyrophoric, high pressure
- Experience using test instrumentation and control components
- Flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required; capability to lift up to 30lbs unassisted
- Physical effort including standing, lifting and carrying light weight such as materials or equipment
- Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
- Work occasionally performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
- Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
